KEN AUSTER. Recognize the name? Chances are that you do. A member of Plein Air Painters of America, Ken is a top tier plein air painter and winner of many firsts at various competitions. One look at his art and the name Ken Auster will not be forgotten! You might have enjoyed viewing prints of Ken’s famous chefs paintings while eating at your local Ruby Tuesday restaurant; or perhaps you own one of Ken’s legendary surfing art T-shirts.
Now, you will have the opportunity to attend his painting workshop starting the last day of the famous plein air event, Plein Air-Easton! You might want to come early and enjoy the last weekend of the competition. With the festival now in its 10th year, the town will be flooded with top-rated artists who will have just finished competing for $30,000 in prize money. Not only will you have a chance to view the exhibition paintings, but there are tons of free demos Friday and Saturday at various locations throughout Easton. The day begins with a Quick Draw competition that is open to all – you just might want to try your hand at that! Saturday alone should leave you inspired and ready to learn at Ken’s workshop that starts the very next day and discover for yourself why students travel from around the world to study with this famous California painter.

This exciting workshop will “kick off” with a painting demonstration and elegant wine reception from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm on Saturday, July 19th at the historic Inn at 202 Dover. The cost is $25 to the public but is included in the cost of your workshop!
For those who wish to extend their evening and have dinner with Ken, it can’t get any better than this! The Inn’s award-winning chef will be preparing an elegant 3-course dinner with accompanying wines to be served at 5:30 pm. The cost for the dinner is $100 per person with the wine pairings and includes tax and gratuity. This intimate dinner will be held in its own private room (The Conservatory), and you are the FIRST to know about it. If this appeals to you, be sure to sign up quickly. Hosts Ron and Shelby Mitchell promise to have you out in time for the Judges Talk at the nearby Academy Art Museum where Awards Juror Peter Trippi, editor of Fine Art Connoissier magazine, will explain his selections.
In addition to hosting this event, the Mitchells are offering a special package/room rate to workshop students. CLICK HERE for details and contact information. All of the luxurious rooms are suites, invoking the Victorian era, providing guests with an international flavor in keeping with the Victorian concept. Note, the number of suites are limited and reservations will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. Although there are other less expensive accommodations in the area, this is a special opportunity to stay in a AAA Four Diamond Inn (the only one of its size in the state of Maryland). The Inn at 202 Dover is located just a short walk from the studio and downtown Easton. No matter what your choice is in accommodations, remember to book early as rooms fill up quickly during Plein Air-Easton. You can find more information about lodging on our web site’s Directions/Lodging page.
More about Ken
When Nancy Tankersley was fairly new to plein air painting, she traveled to Arizona to take Ken’s workshop and found that his approach “just made sense” helping her to quickly recognize the essential elements of a scene and organize them in a way that would result in a good painting. Where she had been overwhelmed by painting outside, after the workshop, painting “en plein air” became more enjoyable and less frustrating. Ken is a master of distilling a scene to its important essentials. In his workshops, he shares his passion for painting with his students with enthusiasm and boundless energy.
